Tonya McCarley on “Advanced Search” at SLA Annual

Join the Taxonomy Division for an exciting program on Advanced Search, presented by Tonya McCarley, Lead User Experience Designer at ProQuest. The session, “EMERGING IDEAS: ‘Advanced Search’ is an Oxymoron,” is scheduled for Sunday, June 12, from 3:30-5:00, in Room 201-A.

Prior to joining ProQuest, Tonya  worked as a User Experience Lead for JSTOR.  In her ten-year UX career, she has also worked in automotive, finance, higher education, and consumer product goods. Collaboration is a key function of her role, working closely with end-users and subject matter experts to understand their needs and with the technology teams implementing the best solutions.

Tonya is also currently an adjunct faculty member at the University of Michigan School of Information. She teaches the “Introduction to Interaction Design” course to graduate students, focusing on understanding the problems users experience. Just as she does with her students, Tonya pushes herself to understand the problems and pain points that users experience before rushing to solutions.

In the Advanced Search session, Tonya will lead the audience in an engaging discussion about the types of searchers that ProQuest’s UX team has studied in their research, looking at how people at different levels start a search, and what they do when they get their results.  She’ll also discuss research methods and trends in advanced searching (or rather, the trend away from  “advanced” search interfaces). Join us for what promises to be a lively session with takeaways for a diverse audience.

They will cover how and why their organizations decided to implement a taxonomy, their approaches to implementation, lessons learned, and the current status. After lunch, the presenters will be available for small group discussions and Q&A with participants who will move around to the speaker tables to interact directly with them. Then three technology and standards groups will present short overviews of their products. Presenters will be available for participants to speak directly with them for a more in-depth understanding of the concepts and options available from each.
